Resumen de Francisca Gonzaga - Maestra or Maestrina? Inferences from a 19th century profession

Tomando como bases a trajetória e o tempo de Francisca Gonzaga, o presente artigo pretende esclarecer questões terminológicas sobre o termo maestrina, assim como o apagamento vernacular do maestra em línguas lusófonas. As metodologias quantitativa e qualitativa foram utilizadas com a clara intenção de mapear e observar o cargo de maestros, maestrinos, maestras e maestrinas na sociedade oitocentista. O trabalho investigativo revelou indícios de que se tratava de dois ofícios musicais diferentes, onde profissionais realizavam tarefas análogas voltadas para atividades musicais distintas. A partir deste pressuposto, explorou-se os pormenores destas duas profissões no século XIX, no Rio de Janeiro, buscando entender, assim, o porquê de Francisca Gonzaga ter sido referida tanto como maestra quanto maestrina durante sua vida.

Considering the life and period of Franscica Gonzaga, the present article aims to investigate terminological issues about the term maestrina, as well as the vernacular erasure of maestra in Lusophone languages. Quantitative and qualitative methodologies were used with the clear intention of mapping and observing the position of maestros, maestrinos, maestras and maestrinas in nineteenth-century society. The investigative work revealed indications that these were two different musical occupations, where professionals performed similar tasks for different musical activities. Based on this assumption, it was explored the details of these two professions in the 19th century in Rio de Janeiro, in order to understand why Francisca Gonzaga was referred to as both maestra and maestrina during her life.
