    En la primera parte de este artículo se recuerda la división de generaciones en el siglo XIX por parte de Pío Baroja y se adelantan sus discrepancias respecto a la anterior a la suya, o sea, la de 1840. La desestimación de esta por la propia, la de 1870, en cuanto a lo cultural, científico, político, etc., se verá reflejada sobre todo en sus desacuerdos con los amigos médicos de Santiago Ramón y Cajal, y especialmente, con él. Esta cuestión se desarrollará ampliamente en la segunda parte del artículo. Por lo que se refiere al apéndice final, tres de sus cuatro apartados son escritos aparecidos en la prensa durante los años 1951 y 1952 que no se habían recuperado hasta ahora.

    The first part of this research recalls the generational divergence in the 19th century by Pío Baroja and his disagreements are brought forward regarding the generation before his, i.e. that of 1840. The dismissal of this one by that of his own, that of 1870, in terms of culture, science, politics, etc., will be seen reflected above all on his divergences with the medical Santiago Ramón y Cajal’s friends, and specially with him. This matter will be thoroughly expounded in the second part of the paper. As the «appendix» regards at the end, three of its four sections are writings published in the press in 1951 and 1952 which had remained forgotten until now.
