    El presente artículo pretende ser un homenaje a la figura de Pearl S. Buck (1892-1973) con motivo del quincuagésimo aniversario de su fallecimiento, revaluando y redescubriendo su popularidad en Occidente, su experiencia en China y su autoridad literaria a nivel mundial. Pearl S. Buck fue una de las escritoras estadounidenses más populares y controvertidas del siglo XX. Su trabajo fue crucial en la percepción de los occidentales, en general, y de los estadounidenses, en particular, sobre China y en la promoción de un entendimiento cultural más sólido entre Occidente y Oriente. Pearl S. Buck pasó un tiempo considerable en China, lo que le dio cierta autoridad para hablar, escribir y opinar sobre dicho país. Pero, ¿qué tipo de autoridad? ¿Por qué sus obras han sido traducidas a más de cien idiomas y leídas por millones de personas en todo el mundo? ¿Por qué sigue siendo una de las escritoras menos estudiadas en la historia literaria occidental? ¿Desde qué punto de vista debe analizarse su escritura? ¿Sigue siendo una autora popular en el siglo XXI? Este artículo intenta responder a estas y otras cuestiones relacionadas con la figura de Pearl S. Buck y pretende ser una invitación a debatir sobre un tema que necesita una mayor investigación en el ámbito de los Estudios de Asia Oriental.

    This paper is intended to be a tribute to the figure of Pearl S. Buck (1892-1973) on the occasion of the fiftieth anniversary of her death, reassessing and rediscovering her popularity in the West, her experience in China, and her literary authority worldwide. Pearl S. Buck was one of the most popular and controversial American writers of the 20th century. Her work was crucial in the perceptions of Westerners in general and Americans in particular of China and in promoting a stronger cultural understanding between the West and the East. Pearl S. Buck spent a considerable time in China, which gave her some authority to speak, write, and opine about that country. But what kind of authority? Why have her works been translated to more than a hundred languages and been read by millions of people around the world? Why does she still remain one of the least studied writers in the Western literary history? From what point of view should her writing be analysed? Is she still a popular author in the 21st century? This paper attempts to answer these and other questions related to the figure of Pearl S. Buck and is intended as an invitation to discuss a topic that needs further research in the field of East Asian Studies.

    本文旨在赛珍珠（1892年—1973年）逝世五十周年之际向她致敬，重新评估和重新发现她在西方的受欢迎程度，她在中国的经历以及她世界文学权威。赛珍珠是20世纪最受欢迎和最具争议的美国作家之一。她的作品对于一般西方人，尤其是美国人对中国的看法以及促进东西方之间更深入的文化理解至关重要。赛珍珠在中国度过了相当长的时间，这使她对中国的评论足够令人信服。本文围绕赛珍珠对中国评价的权威性、其作品被翻译成一百多种语言并为世人阅读的原因、西方文学史上对其研究较少的原因、其作用的受欢迎程度以及赛珍珠形象等问题进行讨论，以期拓展东亚研究等主题和范围。
