    The 19th century is known for the advent of leisure, following the division between working time and leisure time. With the imposition of bourgeois and liberal ideals in Portugal, the social importance of theater grew throughout the 19th century. Seen as a fundamental element of the education of the people, in addition to its recreational character, the theater was seen as a better entertain-ment to others that health and good customs.Going to the theater has become an increasingly frequent practice, which has been extended to people from the most diverse social classes. In Guimarães, theatrical shows integrated the population’s enjoyment of moments and leisure, which can be inferred from the number of news published in the city’s press. Our study intends, essentially, to show how the theater spread in the city of Guimarães, between modern period and in the second half of the 19th century, to identify the places where the shows took place, to explain their typology, as well as the social profile of those who attended them and to highlight the meritorious character that was sometimes associated with them. To carry out our study, we will collect and analyze news from newspapers published at the time, which will be our main source of information.

    A centúria oitocentista é apontada como aquela em que se deu o advento do lazer, na sequência da divisão entre o tempo de trabalho e o tempo livre. Com a impo-sição dos ideais burgueses e liberais em Portugal, a importância social do teatro foi crescendo ao longo do século XIX. Visto como elemento fundamental da edu-cação dos povos, além do seu caráter recreativo, o teatro era tido como espetáculo preferível a outros que, conforme algumas apreciações, prejudicavam a saúde e os bons costumes. A ida ao teatro tornou-se uma prática cada vez mais frequente, que foi alargada a pessoas das mais diversas camadas sociais. Em Guimarães, os espetáculos teatrais integraram a fruição dos momentos de lazer da população, o que se pode depreender do elevado número de notícias publicadas na imprensa da cidade. O nosso trabalho pretende, essencialmente, mostrar a forma como o teatro se difundiu na cidade de Guimarães, entre a época moderna e ao longo da segunda metade da centúria oitocentista, identificar os locais onde os espetá-culos decorriam, explicitar a sua tipologia, bem como o perfil social de quem os frequentava e evidenciar o caráter benemérito que lhes era, por vezes, associado. Para a concretização do nosso estudo, procedemos à recolha e análise de notícias de jornais publicados na época, que foram a nossa principal fonte de informação.
