La especificidad en la universalidad: la imagen del musulmán en los jeroglíficos del IV centenario de la conquista de Valencia

    En el siglo XVII el Barroco ya había establecido unos parámetros claros que derivaron en un lenguaje europeo del poder; una suerte de herramientas universalizadas aplicadas a las diferentes artes que pretendían asentar y transmitir la imagen de una sociedad inamovible. Un ejemplo de esta universalización del arte fueron los emblemas: no solo en España y Europa entera, sino también en América podían verse repetidos algunos de los motivos de la emblemática, ya fuera en forma de publicaciones o en fiestas. Y es en las fiestas precisamente donde se encuentra el punto de mayor comunicación universal, ya que toda la población estaba presente para contemplar las creaciones artísticas. Pero esta universalidad tiene una característica importante: su capacidad de adaptación a situaciones específicas. Así, empleando el lenguaje de la emblemática, se transformaban las tipologías harto repetidas de manera que aún fueran reconocibles pero, al mismo tiempo, pudieran transmitir un nuevo mensaje, diferente, específico para la sociedad y la situación del momento. La ciudad de Valencia en 1638 se presenta como el escenario perfecto para analizar estas diferencias adaptativas, ya que en ella se celebró entonces el Centenario de su conquista cristiana por primera vez desde que los moriscos fueron expulsados de esas tierras. De esta manera, para crear la imagen del conquistado, ahora expulsado, los motivos antes universalizados se modificarán y adaptarán a la historia de este lugar, a su memoria, su desmemoria; se harán específicos con el objetivo de adaptarlos a una sociedad y circunstancias concretas y transmitir una imagen determinada del musulmán que fuera entendible y asumida por el público tan amplio que vería los jeroglíficos en las calles.

    By the 17th century, the Baroque had already established clear parameters that led to a European language of power – a set of universalized tools applied to the different arts that sought to establish and spread the image of an immutable society. An example of this universalization of art were the emblems. Some of the motifs found in emblems could be seen in Spain and all of Europe as well as in America, either as publications or showed at festivities. It is precisely at these festivities where one of the greatest examples of universal communication is found, since the entire population of the city were present to see the artistic creations. But this universality has an important trait: the ability to adapt to specific situations. Using the language of emblems, the often repeated and assumed typologies were transformed in such a way that they were still recognizable but, at the same time, could transmit a new, different message, specific to the society and the situation of the moment. The city of Valencia in 1638 became the perfect setting to analyse these adaptive differences, as the Centenary of its Christian conquest was celebrated there for the first time since the Moriscos were expelled from those lands. Thereby, to create the image of the conquered, now expelled, the previously universalized motifs would be modified and adapted to the History of the place, to its memory and its forgetfulness. They would be made specifically for the purpose of adapting them to each society and circumstance, thus transmitting a certain image of the Muslim that would be understandable and assumed by the wider public that would see the hieroglyphs in the streets.
