The aim of this article is to show that, despite the lack of indisputable material evidence, it can be affirmed that there must have been some kind of agreement (ultimately unfulfilled) on the surrender of the city of Tarifa to the Granada sultan Muhammad II by the Castilian king Sancho IV, after it was taken from the Merinids in 1292. To this end, a review is made of some of the historical sources, particularly those of Arabic origin, and the information available on the diplomacy between Castile, Granada and Aragon in the years that followed is analysed, from which it is possible to draw, albeit not categorically, this conclusion.
