El extractivismo bananero y la transformación del Grupo Ngäbe (1946-2014)

    El artículo forma parte de una investigación más amplia sobre la relación del Estado panameño y el grupo ngäbe a partir de la segunda mitad del siglo XX hasta el presente. En alguna medida, busca estudiar el manejo de los recursos naturales del país, enfocándose en los existentes en la zona occidental del país, en donde se localiza la Comarca Ngäbe-Buglé, creada en 1997.  Aunque las concesiones bananeras entregadas a la compañía estadounidense en Panamá no forman parte del actual territorio ngäbe, en ellas se dieron los primeros encuentros entre este grupo y sus “otros” que conllevó un proceso de transformación del grupo y de la producción bananera, que los preparó para el posterior reclamo y defensa de su territorio frente  a los intereses del grupo central.

    This article is part of a wider investigation regarding the relation between the Panamanian State and the Ngäbe group from the mid twentieth century to the present.  In some way, it seeks to study the country’s management of its natural resources, focusing in the ones existing in the Ngäbe-Buglé Region, founded in 1997.  Even though the banana’s concessions given to the US company in Panama were not in today’s Ngäbe territory, it was there the first meeting place between this group and their “others” that entail a transformation process for the group and the banana production, and prepared them for the following demand and defense of their own territory from the central group’s interests.
