Resumen de Kidnapping as a long-term factor for cruise tourism demand: Evidence from Mexico

  Resumen El turismo de cruceros se considera como uno de los segmentos más atractivos del turismo, así como una de las formas más seguras para viajar. Es así que este artículo tiene como objetivo analizar el impacto de los secuestros en el turismo de cruceros en el largo plazo. El análisis se lleva a cabo por medio de un modelo ARDL estimado con series trimestrales para el periodo 1997Q1-2017Q4, los resul­tados señalan que las llegadas de turistas en crucero han sido inelásticas ante el aumento en el número de secuestros, aunque su efecto negativo permanece en el largo plazo, por lo que es necesario que se apliquen políticas que generen la paz y la tranquilidad que debe darse a los viajeros.

  Abstract Cruise tourism is considered as one of the most attractive tourism segments and as one of the safest ways to travel. This document aims to analyse the impact that registered kidnappings have had on long-term cruise tourism. The analysis is carried out using an ARDL model with quarterly time series data for the period 1997Q1 – 2017Q4. The results indicate that the arrivals of cruise tourists has been inelastic in the face of the changes in the number of kidnappings although the negative effect of this violent crime remains in the long-term. Therefore, it is necessary to apply policies that generate the peace and tranquillity that should be given to travellers.
