Resumen de El role-playing como oportunidad para argumentar en ciencias desde el problema social y cultural de la reapertura de una cantera

María del Mar López Fernández, Antonio Joaquín Franco Mariscal

  • Monte Coronado, located in the capital of Malaga, is named after a limestone crown on its summit. Since prehistoric times, there have been settlements in this area, but its state of conservation is partial, as different activities have caused some loss and damage. Taking this enclave as a starting point, an educational experience was designed and implemented with 18 students of the 1st year of E.S.O. in the subject of Biology and Geology belonging to a school in the vicinity of Mount Coronado. The aim of this experience was to develop critical thinking skills. To do so, the students had to stage a debate on whether to reopen a new quarry on Mount Coronado. In this way, four characters in favour of the quarry opening (a neighbour, a student, a quarry worker and the owner of a construction company), four characters against (a neighbour, a student, an environmentalist and a historian) and two presenters acted out the debate. Cost of the characters provided good quality evidence-based justifications, based on data related to the role to be played. The students rated the activity 9 out of 10.
