  • Stuart Voss set himself an ambitioustask in this book: to reconceptualize, in the vein of recentscholarship, the common binary periodization of Latin Americanhistory. Most textbooks and curricula divide the historicalexperience of Latin America at the Wars of Independence in the earlynineteenth century. Along with Mark Szuchman and many others, Vossproposes instead a three-part periodization with a middle period thatmarks the transition from colonial to modern Latin America.
