Alcifrone lettore della Nea: un’indagine comparativa nelle Epistolai Halieutikai

    The success of Greek theatre in other literary genres, such as epistolography, has been extensively researched and debated. Consequently, it has long been recognized that the incorporation of Greek comedy in Alciphron’s epistolary works, and especially the Nea, holds great signifi cance both in terms of content and style. This investigation aims to trace potential connections between Alciphron and Greek comedies that are partially or entirely lost, by examining indirect traditions. Remarkably, Alciphron’s letters sometimes exhibit precise linguistic and textual similarities with Latin comedies, thus supporting the hypothesis of a shared source. Of particular interest is letter 19 from the ἐπιστολαὶ ἁλιευτικαί, constituting the fi rst book of Alciphron’s epistolary collection. A close verbal analysis will reveal a clear parallel between the text of this letter and a passage from Plautus’ Trinummus, thus suggesting the presence of a possible quotation from Philemon’s Thesauros. Furthermore, this epistle will also permit a comparison with some fragments of Greek comedies, predominantly attributed to Philemon, further corroborating the aforementioned assumption. This comparative approach, encompassing Alciphron, Latin comedies, and fragments of Greek comedies, will deepen our understanding of the interactions among these texts, thus shedding new light on the reception of Greek Theatre.

    La fortuna del teatro greco in altri generi letterari, come l’epistolografi a, è un terreno molto battuto e ricco di studi. Di conseguenza è da tempo noto che la presenza della commedia greca nell’epistolario di Alcifrone, e in particolar modo della Nea, è molto consistente, sia a livello contenutistico che stilistico. Tuttavia, la ricerca può essere approfondita ulteriormente cercando di rintracciare contatti tra Alcifrone e commedie greche in tutto o in parte perdute, per il tramite della tradizione indiretta. Le lettere di Alcifrone, infatti, possono talvolta mostrare delle precise similarità linguistiche e testuali con le commedie latine, andando quindi ad avvalorare l’ipotesi di una fonte comune. In particolare, la lettera 19 delle ἐπιστολαὶ ἁλιευτικαί, che costituiscono il primo libro dell’epistolario di Alcifrone, potrebbe evidenziare un richiamo letterario molto interessante. Infatti, attraverso un’analisi verbale che vedrà un parallelo puntuale tra il testo della lettera e un passo del Trinummus di Plauto, cercherò di dimostrare la presenza di una possibile citazione del Thesauros di Filemone. Inoltre, questa epistola consentirà anche un confronto con alcuni frammenti di commedie greche, prevalentemente appartenenti a Filemone, andando ancora di più a consolidare l’ipotesi formulata in precedenza. Questo approccio comparativo tra Alcifrone, le commedie latine e i frammenti delle commedie greche permetterà di approfondire le interazioni tra questi testi, gettando nuova luce sulla ricezione del teatro greco.
