In a context of uncertainty regarding the use of ChatGPT at the university, this work discursively analyzes a corpus of argumentative texts from first-semester students at a Mexican university. The objective is to elucidate the social representations they share, in order to explain how they conceive artificial intelligence, what role they attribute to it in the framework of academic writing, and how they represent themselves in relation to it. To achieve this, indices of subjectivity/appraisal, voices or ethos involved, and conceptual metaphors, among other aspects, are tracked. The results raise concerns about a problematic vision of writing, their role as students, and academic relations in general.
