Contribuciones antropológicas y de género al estudio del embarazo adolescente en América Latina: contextos, relaciones y significados

    El embarazo adolescente, como fenómeno social presente en el contexto panameño, constituye una preocupación generalizada. A pesar de ello, hasta ahora son pocos los estudios con enfoque clínico, epidemiológico y social que han realizado aportes para una comprensión profunda del tema en el país. Destaca la ausencia de estudios cualitativos que permitan abordar el fenómeno desde las perspectivas de las propias adolescentes. Este artículo tiene como propósito establecer un marco teórico y metodoló-gico desde el cual realizar un estudio antropológico y etnográfico sobre el embarazo en la adolescencia en Panamá. Para ello se realiza un estado de la cuestión sobre el tema en América Latina, revisando los aportes de diversas áreas científicas y metodologías, e identificando los aportes específicos de las técnicas cualitativas y la antropología. Los resultados muestran que la antropología pone en el centro del análisis la construcción social de la adolescencia y la feminidad/maternidad, las jerarquías sociales y de género, y la experiencia y el significado de las adolescentes embarazadas o madres. Sus aportes a la comprensión del embarazo en la adolescencia vinculan contextos, relaciones y significados que explican la ocurrencia y las implicaciones de este para las adolescentes; además, sugieren una intervención dirigida a la prevención de estos embarazos atendiendo a dichos factores estructurales y subjetivos

    Teenage pregnancy, as a social phenomenon present in the Panamanian context, constitutes a wi-despread concern. However, to date, there have been few studies with clinical, epidemiological, and social focus that have contributed to a deep understanding of the issue in the country. The absence of qualitative studies that allow addressing the phenomenon from the perspectives of the teenage girls themselves is notable. This article aims to establish a theoretical and methodological framework from which to conduct an anthropological and ethnographic study on teenage pregnancy in Panama. To do so, it conducts a state-of-the-art review of the topic in Latin America, reviewing contributions from various scientific fields and methodologies, and identifying the specific contributions of qualitative techniques and anthropology. The results show that anthropology places the social construction of adolescence and femininity/motherhood, social and gender hierarchies, and the experiences and meanings of pregnant or mother teenagers at the center of the analysis. Its contributions to understanding teenage pregnancy connect contexts, relationships, and meanings that explain the occurrence and implications of this phenomenon for teenagers, suggesting an intervention aimed at preventing these pregnancies by addressing these structural and subjective factors.
