Los ríos temporales en la península ibérica: notas históricas y alguna reflexión

El autor hace un repaso a los inicios de los estudios de los ríos temporales (o intermitentes) en España en el siglo XX partiendo de las primeras contribuciones de Margalef y llegando hasta los inicios del siglo XXI. Los estudios se iniciaron en los años setenta especialmente en el arco mediterráneo y en los Departamentos de Ecología que en aquel momento empezaban a trabajar en el tema como en Murcia (ríos semiáridos o ramblas) o en Barcelona y Granada (ríos mediterráneos). Se destacan los cursos organizados por Margalef en el IAMZ (Instituto Agronómico Mediterráneo de Zaragoza) y la importancia que tuvieron en la formación de limnólogos en España, así como que fueron un vehículo de contacto de los investigadores españoles con los primeros espadas de la Limnología en aquellos años. Los libros de Margalef de 1983 y el que editó derivado de los cursos del IAMZ (1994), ofrecen un buen panorama de la limnología en España donde los ríos no tienen un papel destacado ni tampoco los temporales. El nacimiento de la Asociación Española de Limnología y sus congresos fueron un buen caldo de cultivo para los estudios de Limnología en España y de ríos en particular. En las Actas de sus congresos primero, y en la revista Limnetica después, se publicaron los primeros trabajos sobre ríos temporales. El proyecto Guadalmed y algunos trabajos de síntesis entre final de los años noventa y principios de los dos mil marcan el final de esta fase “histórica”. También se examinan la importancia de estos estudios para la gestión del agua y su relación con la DMA (Directiva Marco del Agua) y se destaca la colaboración entre la Administración y los ecólogos en la producción de protocolos que han sido muy útiles para el conocimiento de los ríos temporales y su inclusión en los tipos de ríos a gestionar en el contexto de la DMA.

The author reviews, with a personal vision, the beginnings of the studies of temporary (or intermittent) rivers in Spain in the 20th century starting from the first contributions of Margalef and reaching the beginning of the 21st century. The studies began in the 1970s, especially in the Mediterranean arc and in the Ecology departments that were beginning to work on the subject at that time, such as Murcia (semi-arid rivers or ramblas) or Barcelona and Granada (Mediterranean rivers). The courses organized by Margalef at the IAMZ (Instituto Agronómico Mediterráneo de Zaragoza) and the importance they had in the training of limnologists in Spain are highlighted, as well as the fact that they were a contact vehicle for Spanish researchers with the most relevant limnologist in those years. Margalef's 1983 books and the one he edited derived from the IAMZ courses in 1994, offer a good overview of limnology in Spain, where rivers do not play a prominent role nor the temporal ones. The birth of the Spanish Association of Limnology and its congresses were a good breeding ground for studies of Limnology in Spain and of rivers. The first works on temporary rivers were published first in the Proceedings of their congresses and later in the Limnetica journal. The Guadalmed project and some synthesis works between the end of the 1990s and the beginning of the 2000s, mark the end of this “historic” phase. The importance of these studies for water management and their relationship with the WFD (Water Framework Directive) are also examined, and the collaboration between the Administration and ecologists in the production of protocols that have been very useful for understanding temporary rivers and their inclusion as one river type to be included in the river to be managed in the context of the WFD
