The aim of this study is an in vitro evaluation of the capacity to prevent apical microleakage of amalgam and compomer. Seventy roots, previously endodontiated with apicoectomy, were divided into four groups: first thirty roots were retrofilled with silver amalgam non gamma, secondly thirthy roots were retrofilled with compomer Dyract®. A third group of five roots were not made a retrocavity (negative control), and another group of five roots were not retrofilled (positive control). Then, in the groups 1, 2 and 4 the roots were varnished in the whole root surface except for the apical surface. Afterwards dyed (methylen blue at 1% during eight days), washed and eliminated the varnish and finally cut (longitudinal axis in the midle of retrocavity). An stereomicroscope was used to mesure the microleakage (magnification 1,6). The statistical analysis proved that there was significative statistic difference between amalgam and compomer (p<0,05). To conclude, the amalgam get better sealing ability than compomer used as retrofill material in vitro.
