    El consumo excesivo de alcohol es problema central de salud pública en Chile. Su trato ha seguido criterios biomédicos/administrativos (Programa Nacional, 1957), sin mayor impacto en la población, mas también promoviendo la participación popular en salud, en especial en el período 1968-1973, en un nuevo concepto de interacción con los afectados y la comunidad. El artículo enuncia el contexto social de entonces y las perspectivas que surgen de esta visión del problema.

    Excessive alcohol consumption is a central public health problem in Chile. Its treatment has followed biomedical / administrative criteria (National Program, 1957), without major impact on the population, but also promoting popular participation in health, especially in the period 1968-1973, in a new concept of interaction with those affected and the community. The article states the social context of that time and the perspectives that emerge from this vision of the problem.
