Cross-cultural examination of calligraphy heritage in arts education: Assessing the influence of practices in Yuan-Ming Transition on cultural sensitivity and artistic proficiency

    • Objective: Calligraphy heritage connects people to their roots and inspires contemporary art. The Yuan-Ming Transition has revitalized artistic proficiency, traditional values, while bridging understanding through cultural sensitivity. Hence, the present study explored the underlying relationships between calligraphy heritage, artistic proficiency, cultural sensitivity, and the Yuan-Ming Transition in Chinese culture. Method: To comprehensively investigate these interconnected themes, the present study employed a mixed-methods approach, by combining in-depth interviews (i.e., semi-structured and open-ended) with content analysis. Fourteen in-depth interviews were conducted with experts, including calligraphy practitioners, art historians, cultural scholars, and individuals with significant cultural expertise. Results: Chinese culture proves resilient amidst historical shifts, with calligraphy’s enduring influence. Conclusion: The finding of this ground-breaking research has broad implications for educators, artists, scholars, cultural institutions, and diplomats. It stresses the significance of preserving cultural heritage, fostering cultural awareness, and promoting cross-cultural understanding in an increasingly interconnected world.
