In 2021, through a bequest, Musea Brugge managed to add an Ecce Homo attributed to the Albrecht Bouts studio to its collection. This painting belongs to the devotional works made in mass production in Bouts’ studio, more specifically to the very popular depictions of Christ wearing the thorned crown. As demonstrated by Valentine Henderiks, several prototypes can be recognised in this category, executed by Albrecht Bouts, and each copied several times. The panel in Musea Brugge’s collection bears the closest resemblance to an Ecce Homo from the Suermondt-Ludwig-Museum collection in Aachen, and within this group of works, it is most closely related to a version from Humbeek. The Bruges work has been restored, which was necessary because of numerous discoloured overpaintings, yellowed varnish layers, remnants of old glue and accumulations of dirt, as well as conservation issues. At the same time, it was subjected to a technical examination, the results of which are shared here and juxtaposed with previous observations and findings.
