    From a semiotic perspective interested in the functioning of culture, this article studies the role of the sea and maritime travel in the discursive construc-tion of Portuguese national identity. Given the constructivist nature of semiotics, national identity is studied as a cultural artifact that assigns meaning to social reality in cognitive and affective terms, rather than as an essence or pre-social datum. Through the study of certain episodes and passages from the works Os Lusíadas (Camões) and Mensagem (Pessoa), the aim is to argue how the sea and maritime travel have enabled the discursive construction and mythification of the Portuguese “We” based on values of danger, suffering, courage, and recognition

    De uma perspetiva semiótica interessada no funcionamento da cultura, este artigo estuda o papel do mar e da viagem marítima na construção discur-siva da identidade nacional portuguesa. Dado o caráter construtivista da semiótica, estuda-se a identidade nacional como um artifício cultural que atribui sentido à realidade social em termos cognitivos e afetivos, e não como uma essência ou um dado pré-social. Mediante o estudo de alguns episódios e passagens das obras Os Lusíadas (Camões) e Mensagem (Pessoa), pretende-se argumentar como o mar e a viagem marítima têm possibilitado a construção discursiva e a mitificação do “Nós” português, partindo dos valores de perigo, sofrimento, coragem e reconhecimento
