    El Archivo histórico del Museo Nacional de Ciencias Naturales (MNCN), tan antiguo como la propia Institución (1771), es uno de los archivos científicos más importantes de Europa en el ámbito de la zoología, geología y paleontología. Sus fondos tanto textuales, iconográficos como fotográficos narran por sí mismos la evolución de las ciencias naturales en nuestro país desde mediados del siglo XVIII hasta la actualidad. La creación del Real Gabinete de Historia Natural (RGHN), el redescubrimiento de América con las expediciones científicas, la formación de las primeras colecciones de Historia Natural y el progreso científico están registrados en sus fondos, que son reflejo del trabajo investigador, docente y museístico de la Institución. Aunque la incorporación de documentos originales con sus descripciones al Catálogo de la Red de Bibliotecas y Archivos del CSIC tiene una antigüedad de casi dos décadas, ha sido en estos últimos años cuando el MNCN ha puesto la consulta de sus fondos históricos más antiguos y solicitados a disposición de todos y desde cualquier parte del planeta, tras tres intensas y continuadas campañas de digitalización.

    The Historical Archive of the National Museum of Natural Sciences (MNCN), as old as the Institution itself (1771), is one of the most important scientific archives in Europe in the field of zoology, geology and paleontology. Its textual, iconographic and photographic collections narrate the evolution of the natural sciences in our country from the mid-18th century to the present day. The creation of the Royal Cabinet of Natural History, the rediscovery of America with scientific expeditions, the formation of the first Natural History collections and scientific progress are recorded in its collections, which reflect the research, teaching and museum work of the Institution. Although the incorporation of original documents with their descriptions into the Catalogue of the Network of Libraries and Archives of the CSIC is almost two decades old, it has been in recent years that the MNCN has made its oldest and most requested historical collections available to all and from anywhere in the world, after three intense and continuous digitization campaigns.
