Resumen de Translanguaging como pedagogía en el “South Side” de Milwaukee, Wisconsin: potencial, barreras y próximos pasos

  Translanguaging es una teoría y una pedagogía lingüística que quiere reconocer la realidad de la gente bilingüe y plurilingüe y como las lenguas existen de forma fluida y natural en su mente, con el fin de crear sistemas educativos que reflejen y desarrollen estas habilidades de forma académica. Actualmente, la inmigración y la movilidad están aumentando constantemente y como resultado estamos viendo un panorama lingüístico más interconectado que nunca. La necesidad de adaptarse a esa nueva realidad ha sido evidente desde hace tiempo y cada día sale nueva información sobre los beneficios potenciales de teorías como el translanguaging para poblaciones multilingües. Dicho eso, la teoría falta implementación a gran escala en la práctica que le permitiría ser comprendida y aceptada a nivel de la sociedad. Este trabajo tiene la intención de obtener conocimiento y opiniones de profesorado trabajando en la práctica en comunidades multilingües del South Side de Milwaukee, Wisconsin y comparar esa información con las creencias del mundo académico. A través de entrevistas con ese profesorado vamos a poder ver en detalle el potencial, las barreras y los próximos pasos para el translanguaging y para comunidades multilingües y multiculturales. Este trabajo quiere ampliar el conocimiento sobre el translanguaging y la educación en comunidades multilingües para reafirmar la necesidad de adaptar los sistemas educativos hacia las comunidades y estudiantes a las que sirven.

  Translanguaging is a linguistic theory and pedagogy that aims to recognize the reality of how the languages of bilingual and plurilingual people exist fluidly and naturally in their brains and create educational systems that reflect and develop those linguistic abilities academically. With immigration levels and general mobility constantly increasing, the linguistic landscape is becoming more intermingled than ever before. The need to adapt to this new reality has been apparent for some time now, and every day more research comes to light about the potential benefits of theories such as translanguaging for plurilingual populations. That being said, this theory lacks formal implementation in school systems on a broad scale that would allow for its understanding and acceptance within society at large. This thesis aims to bridge the gap between the academic world and the practical one by gaining insight from interviewees who have or are currently working within multilingual communities on the “South Side” of Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

  Through these interviews, we get a closer look at the potential, the barriers, and the envisioned next steps for translanguaging and for multilingual and multicultural communities to bring to light any potential disconnect between academia and the real world. This thesis aims to add to the fountain of knowledge surrounding translanguaging and education in multilingual communities and reaffirm the necessity to tailor our educational systems towards the ever-changing communities and students that we serve.
