Resumen de Mutations et réoccupations des sites ruraux du Haut Empire romain au Moyen-Âge dans l’Aveyron

Charlène Routaboul

  • The department of Aveyron, formerly the northern territory of the Rutenes, lies on the fringes of the Augustan Aquitaine region. Aveyron has examples of archaeological sites occupied from Antiquity to the Middle Ages. This evidence of continuous occupation enables us to understand how land-use patterns of Gallo-roman societies evolved during late antiquity. Research has revealed a number of sites with evidence of 5th century habitation in the Rutenes, and by using various dating methods (ceramology, 14C., etc.) we can identify the continuities and breaks in the occupational history of this region. While mining production usually has evidence of continual use, e.g. the Bouco-payrol mines, we can also see that the settlement patterns undervwent changes and shifts, e.g. the Panissal site in Savignac. The investigation into land use during late Antiquity in Aveyron is a component of my doctoral research and the aim of this study is to summarise the population changes over time using a comparative approach wich considers the habitat and production site.
