In Paris in the second half of the 18th Century there was a German or pro-German cultural circle around the Encyclopédie which was trying to forge, with the help of French recognition, a German national identity. Baron d'Holbach, by his scientific translations and his contributions to the Encyclopédie, brought a German influence to bear on reflections on the arts and technology. This concerned mainly German mineralogy and metallurgy which were inspired by a natural philosophy still influenced by alchemy. Thus, in the heart of a work inspired by mechanistic physics, matter was still seen as an organism.
