  • Resumen
    • It is possible, by an analysis of different texts in conjunction with certain established facts, to get a closer approximation to the date of Diderot's «mystical crisis » ; we can situate it around 1731-2, as his daughter says, during his studies. A «mystical crisis » is not the same thing as a plan for an ecclesiastical career, or as an almost professional study of metaphysical and theological problems, obligatory for all future philosophers. Instead it probably coincided with his desire to become a Carthusian monk and with adolescent problems ; it thus constituted an incident in his emotional life rather than a stage in his intellectual development. Although apparently in line with his education, this crisis in fact marked a break with his childhood faith and with emotionally-experienced faith. Religion henceforth became an object of rational study.
