Por muchos siglos el bibliotecario tuvo como función básica y primordial la conservación y Custodia de aquellos tesoros. Conforme el tiempo pasó, las características de las bibliotecas y por ende de la actividad bibliotecaria cambiaron "ganaron mucho en su crecimiento y desarrollo" exigiendo como consecuencia que el bibliotecario ampliara su custodia y se preocupara aún más por su ordenación.

For many centuries the librarian had as a basic and primordial function the conservation and Custody of those treasures. As time went by, the characteristics of the libraries and therefore of the librarian activity changed "they gained a lot in their growth and development" demanding as a consequence that the librarian extend their custody and worry even more about their arrangement.
