Resumen de Hollow, solid, and faster-rolling cylinders

  • The comparison between hollow and solid rolling cylinders has long been a classic lecture demonstration and textbook example to convey the concept of moment of inertia to students.1 The ratio of accelerations between these two objects is 4/3, which can be observed when rolling them simultaneously or via reasonably careful timing. Our recent paper2 describes a demonstration in which objects with the same mass and rolling radius have a far more extreme acceleration ratio of 25. Here, I describe a similar and extremely simple extension that can be integrated into any existing hollow and solid cylinder rolling demonstration, by creating a third object of matching mass, radius, and length that would continue the idea of distributing the mass even closer to the center of the object.
