Breve caracterización de las colonias reproductivas de aves acuáticas (Charadriiformes) presentes en los cayos del noreste de Villa Clara, Cuba

    A finales de mayo de 2006 y principios de junio de 2007 se visitaron varios cayos ubicados al noreste de la provincia Villa Clara, con el objetivo de documentar aspectos relacionados con las colonias de aves acuáticas que nidifican en los mismos. Dada la pequeña extensión de los cayos, fueron revisados en su totalidad con el objetivo de registrar la presencia de especies de aves en estado reproductivo. Se midieron, entre otras variables, el número de nidos, número de huevos por nido, peso, largo y ancho de los huevos, número de polluelos por nido y la distancia entre nidos de una misma especie. Como resultado del estudio se pudo corroborar la importancia de los cayos muestreados para la reproducción de varias especies de aves coloniales, fundamentalmente para el Galleguito (Leucophaeus atricilla) y la Gaviota monja (Onychoprion anaethetus). Se anexa además la lista de especies del Parque Nacional Marino «Los Caimanes», atendiendo a la necesidad de profundizar en el conocimiento de la biodiversidad presente en esta área protegida. Se recomienda continuar los estudios y el monitoreo de las colonias en las áreas visitadas, aumentando el esfuerzo de muestreo durante cada temporada reproductiva.

    At the end of May (2006) and principles of June (2007) several keys of the northeastern part of Villa Clara province were visited, in order to document aspects related with the aquatic bird nesting colonies located in these territories. Because of the small extension of the keys, a census was carried out, with the objective of registering the presence of all aquatic bird species in reproductive state. In the colonies visited, and for every breeding aquatic bird species, were measured variables such as the total number of nests, number of eggs for nest, weight and maximum long and wide of the eggs, number of chicks for nest and the distance among the nests of the same species. As a result of the study was corroborated the importance of the sampled keys for the reproduction of several colonial birds species, fundamentally for the Laughing gull (Leucophaeus atricilla) and the Bridled tern (Onychoprion anaethetus). It is also annexed the list of bird species of «Los Caimanes» National Marine Park, assisting to the necessity of deepening in the knowledge of the biodiversity present in this protected area. It is recommended to continue the studies and monitoring of the breeding colonies in the visited areas, increasing the sampling effort during each breeding season.
