Update on a Competency-Based Physics Course

  • In 2019 we implemented a one-semester, face-to-face introductory course covering algebra-based mechanics, fluid mechanics, and thermodynamics that combined elements from standards- and competency-based education. A report about this course was published in Ref. 1; see also references therein for background. As a response to student feedback, and with the need to go online for the 2020–2022 versions of the course due to the COVID pandemic, we made several adjustments. The aim of this paper is to reflect on the impact of those changes.
