Resumen de ¿Contribuye la asignatura de filosofía al desempeño académico?

  Este artículo analiza si el tener un año adicional de la asigna-tura de filosofía durante la educación media se asocia con el rendi-miento de los estudiantes en Chile, reflejado en los resultados de la Prueba de Selección Universitaria (PSU) de Lenguaje y Matemáticas. Para llevar a cabo este análisis se confecciona una única base de datos a partir de tres fuentes de información del Ministerio de Educación (Mineduc), con los puntajes PSU, las asignaturas cursadas y otras varia-bles relevantes en el estudio. Se analiza la situación de cada estudian-te de los distintos establecimientos humanístico-científicos en Chile que en 2015 cursan segundo medio, tercero medio en 2016 y que en 2017, en cuarto medio, rindieron la PSU. Se realizan dos modelos de regresión lineal por mínimos cuadrados ordinarios, cuyos resultados muestran que hay una asociación positiva entre ambas variables y que con un año adicional de filosofía mejoran los puntajes de PSU del alumnado en ese período. Así, se espera fomentar la importancia de la práctica de la filosofía y el pensamiento crítico desde la educación escolar.

  This article analyzes whether having an additional year of the philosophy subject in secondary education is associated with the per-formance of students in Chile, reflected in the results of the Language and Mathematics University Selection Test (PSU). To carry out this analysis, a single database is created from three sources of informa-tion from the Ministry of Education, with the PSU scores, the subjects taken, and other relevant variables in the study. Each student from the different Humanistic-Scientific schools in Chile who attend 2nd grade in 2015, 3rd grade in 2016 and who take the PSU in 4th grade in 2017 is analyzed. Two linear regression models by ordinary least squares are carried out, which show that there is a positive association between both variables and that with an additional year of philosophy, the stu-dent’s PSU scores improve in that time. Thus, it is expected to promote the importance of the practice of philosophy and critical thinking from school education.
