The objective of this work is to publicize the advances that have been made for the knowledge of the solar radiation weather variable in the Republic of Cuba using theoretical models for this purpose. The values of theoretical solar radiation in the Republic of Cuba, from the Hottel model, were calculated with the use of RSE-SOL software. Data related to geographic longitude and latitude and height were obtained from the Shuttle Radar Topographic Model of the United States Geological Survey (USGS). Real sunstroke data from the Cuba Meteorological Station Network were used for the period 1975-2003 and theoretical insolation data were calculated. The maps of daily averages for the months of January, July and August and the annual global solar radiation are presented considering the sea level height values obtained from the Numerical Terrain Model of the study area. The maximum annual global radiation values are located south of the archipelago, while the minimums appear, mainly in the areas that correspond to the different mountain systems according to Hottel’s clear day model product of cloudiness. From the above, it is recommended to continue processing to obtain direct and diffuse radiation in order to complete all the elements that constitute the different types of radiation for use in engineering
