Macbeth, una de las grandes obras de la literatura occidental, puede ser leída de múltiples maneras. Presento aquí tres momentos de una única visión abarcadora, una en cuyo eco resuenan las convicciones últimas de la obra shakespereana. No se trata, en realidad, de consideraciones literarias: la obra de este autor extraordinario constituye en sí misma una indagación en torno a las cuestiones que sostienen nuestra existencia. El presente ensayo se estructura a partir de tres grandes temáticas que sirven de guía a la investigación: ¿Qué es un hombre?,¿qué hace a un héroe?, ¿por qué está prohibido asesinar? El texto va deshilvanando la trama para plantear que la potencia y dignidad de la vida ancla su pujanza en el sustrato ético del lenguaje, que constituye el fondo inquebrantable de nuestros significados.

Macbeth, one of the great works of Western literature, can be read in multiple ways. I present here three moments of a single all-encompassing vision, one that echoes the ultimate convictions of Shakespeare’s work. It is not, in fact, a matter of literary considera-tions: the work of this remarkable author is itself an inquiry into the questions that sustain our existence. The text is structured around three topics that guide the investigation: What is a man, what makes a hero, and why is murder forbidden? The essay explores these fun-damental questions in order to claim that the power and dignity of life anchors its strength in an ethical substratum that constitutes the unyielding background of our meanings.
