    La forma de financiación del comercio marítimo mediterráneo en la Baja Edad Media fue la comenda. La comenda hunde sus raíces en las prácticas financieras griegas y romanas que favorecieron el desarrollo del comercio en el Mare Nostrum. Los documentos notariales dejan testimonio de la participación de capitales femeninos en el comercio marítimo, especialmente cuando se trata de financiar a familiares.

    The usual way of financing of the maritime trade in the Mediterranean during the late Middle Age was the «comenda». The origin of the «comenda» is found in the Greek and Roman financial practices which enabled the development of the trade in the Mare Nostrum. The notarial records prove the participation of women’s capitals in the maritime trade, especially in family businesses.
