Resumen de El proceso de civilización del petimetre: Entre la práctica y la apariencia

No hay otra figura que encarne mejor el siglo XVIII español que el petimetre.Estereotipo masculino de una clase preminentemente urbana, se convirtió enpersonaje de sátiras y crítica social. Sin embargo, Clavijo y Fajardo -entre otrosnumerosos autores ilustrados- señalaba que fue el petimetre quien primeramente utilizó la palabra “civilización”. En efecto, su figura no solo se opuso a la tradición y al mundo rustico de los casticistas, sino que favoreció el proceso de civilización disciplinar en la sociabilidad de la segunda mitad del siglo ilustrado. Pero, ¿en realidad fue un personaje tan fatuo y superficial? ¿Es cierto que procedía de la clase privilegiada? Estos son algunos de los interrogantes a los que se tratará de dar respuesta en este estudio a través de la documentación y de la literatura histórica con el fin de comprobar el contraste y la dualidad cultural generada, así como si se trató de un colectivo minoritario en la sociedad de la época.

No other figure better embodies the Spanish 18th century than the petimetre. A male stereotype of a predominantly urban class, he became a character of satire and social criticism. However, Clavijo y Fajardo - among many other enlightened authors - points out that it was the petimetre who first used the word “civilization”. Indeed, the petimetre not only opposed the tradition and the rustic world of the castellans, but also favored the process of disciplinary civilization in the sociability of the second half of the Enlightenment. But was he really such a fatuous and superficial character, and did he really come from the privileged class? These are some of the questions that this study will try to answer through documentation and historical literature in order to verify the contrast and cultural duality generated, as well as whether it was a minority group in the society of the time.
