The Oligocene basins of southern Provence (Nury,1988 ; Nury and Schreiber, 1997) extend from Fos-surmerin the west, to the Luberon massif in the north, and as far east as Toulon (Figure 1). Major basins include the Marseilles Basin, Aix-en-Provence Basin, and the Nerthe Chain area, which contains the Saint-Pierre-les Martiques Basin and the Le Rouet Basin. The small Bandoland Ollioules Basins lie near Toulon in the southern most study area. These irregular basins were formed duringthe extension of the European platform in the Oligocene resulting from the formation of the West Europeanrift system (Illies, 1975; Arthaud et al., 1980;Bergerat, 1985, 1987) and the Liguro-Provenal rift, which evolved into an oceanic basin (Orsini et al., 1980;Rehault, 1981; Guieu and Roussel, 1990). The extensionaltectonics directly affected the patterns of sedimentation within the continental basins.
