        Los estrechos vinculos familiares entre Emanuel Filiberto I de Saboya y Felipe II propiciaron que intercambiaran retratos familiares desde que separaron en 1551. El italiano envió a su pintor Giorgio Solario a la Península Ibérica en una campaña entre 1578 y 1580 para retratar a las familias reales portuguesa y española. Paralelamente otros pintores, como Alessandro Ardente viajaba a la vecina corte de Parma para retratar al sobrino de Felipe II, Alejandro Farnesio y a toda su familia. Sin embargo, el pintor más destacado fue Jan Kraeck, italianizado Giovanni Caracca, quien acompañó a Carlo Emanuele de Saboya a Zaragoza en 1585 con motivo de su matrimono con la infanta Catalina Micaela. Un segundo viaje a España para retratar a la familia real española tuvo lugar entre 1591 y 1592.

       The close family ties between Emanuele Filiberto I of Savoy and Philip II led to the exchange of family portraits since their separation in 1551. The Italian sent his painter Giorgio Solario to the Iberian Peninsula for a campaign between 1578 and 1580 to portray the Portuguese and Spanish royal families. At the same time, other painters such as Alessandro Ardente traveled to the court of neighboring Parma to portray Philip II's nephew, Alexander Farnese, and his entire family. However, the most outstanding painter was the Flemish Jan Kraeck, known as Giovanni Caracca, who accompanied Carlo Emanuele of Savoy to Saragossa in 1585 for his marriage to the Infanta Catalina Micaela. A second trip of this artist to Spain to portray the Spanish royal family took place between 1591 and 1592. Likewise, many portraits from Turin arrived in Madrid in reciprocity so that Catalina Micaela's family and its evolution could be known in Spain.
