Sobre Benito Sánchez Galindo y el Maestro de la tabla de San Benito de Montserrat: pinturas del retablo de la capilla de Talavera (Catedral Vieja de Salamanca)

       En este artículo se estudian las pinturas que forman parte del retablo renacentista que alberga la capilla de San Salvador o Talavera, en la Catedral Vieja de Salamanca. Aunque ya se habían hecho distintas propuestas sobre su autoría, las nuevas aportaciones al estudio de la pintura española del siglo XVI permiten centrar de forma más precisa la cuestión. De esta forma, el presente estudio las atribuye a un pintor anónimo cuyo estilo viene definido por las obras publicadas por la Carmelo Solís e Isabel Mateo a nombre de Benito Sánchez Galindo. Sin embargo, investigaciones posteriores obligan a deslindar las pinturas de la mano de este maestro, por lo que en este trabajo se le acuña el nombre convencional del “Maestro de la tabla de San Benito de Montserrat”, mientras no se pueda identificar a través de una evidencia documental. Asimismo, se pone en relación con las pinturas del retablo de la iglesia de San Pedro en la localidad extremeña de Garrovillas de Alconétar.

       This article studies the paintings that are part of the Renaissance altarpiece located in the chapel of San Salvador or Talavera, in the Old Cathedral of Salamanca. Although different proposals had already been made about his authorship, the new contributions to the study of 16th century Spanish painting allow us to focus the question more precisely. In this way, the present study attributes them to an anonymous painter whose style is defined by the works published by Carmelo Solís and Isabel Mateo in the name of Benito Sánchez Galindo. However, subsequent investigations force us to separate the paintings from the hand of this master, so in this work the conventional name of the “Master of the panel of Saint Benedict of Montserrat” is coined, while it cannot be identified through documentary evidence. Likewise, it is related to the paintings on the altarpiece of the church of San Pedro in the Extremaduran town of Garrovillas de Alconétar.
