El propósito de este artículo es hacer una revisión de las concepciones del gobierno municipal que durante el siglo XX para analizar cuál es la dimensión de la reforma sobre la reelección consecutiva. Desde la perspectiva del autor, este cambio parece una oportunidad para hacer algunas preguntas sobre el diseño de un órgano de gobierno que lucha por conservar su lugar en un mundo contemporáneo donde la creciente urbanización y los constante mutación de las sociedades urbanas le reclama a esa vieja figura jurídica una constante actualización y adecuación.

The aim of this article is to review the main debates surrounding the Mexican municipality over the Twentieth Century. Specifically, this paper is interested in analysing the role of the process of consecutive re-election in these debates. As we argue throughout the paper, the recent political reform, which introduces this re-election, provides an opportunity think critically about this level of government, which is struggling to retains its place within a Mexico that is no longer the coun-try of the early twentieth century.
