    O objetivo do nosso texto consiste, essencialmente, em fazer, ainda que de forma bastante sucinta, o estado da arte sobre as epidemias que grassaram em Portugal durante o século XVIII. Para o efeito, recorremos à literatura médica (livros, ensaios, teses, dissertações e imprensa médica), produzida nos séculos XIX e XX. Pretende-se, então, fazer uma análise crítica dessas fontes, que mostram o crescente interesse que a temática gerou e para o qual contribuíram, entre outros fatores, os avanços alcançados no campo da medicina, mas sobretudo os efeitos dos surtos epidémicos que se abateram sobre a Europa em oitocentos, nomeadamente de cólera, febre-amarela e peste bubónica, bem como a persistência de diversas enfermidades, comoa varíola, o tifo ou a febre tifoide. Desta feita, para além da análise do discursomédico, procuramos, ainda, perceber as fontes informacionais em que se apoia, de modo a questionar algumas asserções sobre as doenças e as epidemias da Idade Moderna

    The objective of our intervention is to make a state of the art about the epidemics that raged in Portugal during the 18th century, based on the medical literature (books, theses, essays, dissertations and medical press), produced in the 19th and 20th centuries, which sought to explore historical epidemiology, highlighting the antiquity of certain diseases. The objective will be to carry out a critical analysis of these sources, which stem from the growing interest that the subject has aroused as a result of the advances registered in the field of medicine, but mainly due to the outbreaks that hit the European context in the 19th century, namely cholera, yellow fever, bubonic plague and the persistence of diseases such as smallpox, typhus or typhoid fever. This time, we will try to analyze the medical discourse, focused on the historical context of diseases, trying to understand their informational sources, in order to question some of the assertions that they construct about the diseases and epidemics of the Modern Age, through discourses produced a posteriori, and in a time of affirmation of its power.
