The libraries and archives of Milan house a vast collection of architectural drawings that date back to the first half of the 17th century. These drawings provide valuable insights into the work of architects and engineers who served various clients during that time, including civil and ecclesiastical institutions, religious orders, and local patricians. During this period, architectural design evolved into a formalized documentation process, serving not only as a means of personal expression and research but also as a socially significant act.
In this essay, the drawings are examined through the lens of this interpretation. It begins with a comprehensive classification of tools and techniques used in architectural representation, shedding light on their diverse applications. The focus is on understanding the shared objectives that guided the daily practices of workshops and architectural studios operating in Milan and its surrounding regions. The materials used, such as paper, metal pens, ink, pencils, and colors, are also taken into consideration.
