    La sensibilidad hacia la protección del instrumental científico ha cambiado mucho en los últimos años. Como muestra de ello cada vez es más frecuente que las investigaciones de historia de la ciencia cuenten con la perspectiva que puede aportar el estudio del patrimonio material científico y técnico.

    En 1943 el Museo Nacional de Ciencias Naturales recibió una importante donación de instrumental utilizado en sus investigaciones por el ingeniero de Montes y microscopista Joaquín María de Castellarnau. El paso del tiempo había desdibujado este importante patrimonio histórico pues, no sólo se había perdido el rastro de muchos objetos, sino que tampoco estaban suficientemente documentadas y localizadas las piezas que hoy conservamos.

    Como parte de la labor que realiza la Colección de Instrumentos Científicos Históricos hemos tratado de solucionar esta situación. Se ha reconstruido el contexto documental, clarificado el número de piezas conservadas y puesto los medios apropiados para su conservación futura. De esta forma ponemos en relevancia la figura del científico que con su gesto altruista ha beneficiado, no solo a la institución, sino a la reconstrucción de una parte de la historia de la ciencia, asegurándonos por otra parte la integridad de los objetos donados que en la actualidad se encuentran identificados y en buen estado de conservación.

    Sensitivity towards the protection of scientific instruments has changed a lot in recent years. As proof of this, it is increasingly common for research into the history of science to have the perspective that the study of scientific and technical material heritage can provide.

    In 1943, the National Museum of Natural Sciences received an important donation of instruments used in its research by the engineer from Montes and microscopist Joaquín María de Castellarnau. The passage of time had blurred this important historical heritage because, not only had the trace of many objects been lost, but also the pieces that we preserve today were not sufficiently documented and located.

    As part of the work carried out by the Collection of Historical Scientific Instruments, we have tried to solve this situation. The documentary context has been reconstructed, the number of pieces preserved has been clarified, and the appropriate means have been put in place for their future conservation. In this way, we highlight the figure of the scientist who, with his altruistic gesture, has benefited not only the institution, but also of the reconstruction of a part of the history of science, assuring us on the other hand the integrity of the donated objects. Objects that in currently they are identified and in a good state of conservation.
