  • Resumen
    • In the last two decades some basic changes have been made in approaches to national parks and protected areas in North America. Notable are developments in ecosystem theory and applications, recognition of socioeconomic benefits of ecological services provided by protected areas, advances in interactive and adaptive or collaborative planning, and the consideration of parks and protected areas as part of a land use spectrum ranging from wildlands to urban regions. These advances have been applied to varying degrees in Canada, the United States, and Mexico, in part because of the differing values related to nature and heritage conservation in these three countries. These changes and their repercussions on protected area planning, management and decision making are summarized in this paper largely on the basis of the findings of a recent book on "Protected Areas and the Regional Planning Imperative in North America". This summary paper concludes with a number of recommendations and findings applicable to protected areas and regional planning at various scales in North America.
