Resumen de El "Libro de causas" del arzobispo Silíceo: problemas de edición e interpretación

El llamado "Libro de causas" que el arzobispo de Toledo, Juan Martínez Silíceo, presentó ante el Consejo Real de Castilla en 1548 para defender la necesidad de aprobar un estatuto de limpieza de sangre en su catedral es, a juicio de Julio Caro Baroja, “uno de los más importantes documentos de carácter antisemita redactados en España”. Efectivamente, se trata de un compendio de todas las acusaciones antijudías existentes en la época, aplicadas, en este caso, no contra los judíos que lo eran realmente, sino contra los judeoconversos y sus descendientes. Es, además, por la influencia posterior que tuvo, uno de los más importantes textos dedicados a la legitimación de los estatutos de limpieza de sangre. Sin embargo, a pesar de su importancia y de que fue copiado profusamente entre los siglos XVI y XVIII, nunca ha sido objeto de una edición moderna. Esta comunicación presenta la primera edición del Libro, describe los problemas que se han tenido que afrontar para realizarla y señala cómo esos problemas pueden afectar a la interpretación del documento.

The so-called Libro de causas that the Archbishop of Toledo, Juan Martínez Silíceo, presented before the Royal Council of Castile in 1548 to defend the need to approve a statute of purity of blood in his cathedral is, in the opinion of Julio Caro Baroja, “one of the most important anti-Semitic documents written in Spain”. Indeed, it is acompendium of all the anti-Jewish accusations existing at the time, applied, in this case, not against the Jews, but against Judeo-converts and their descendants. It is also, due to its later influence, one of the most important texts dedicated to the legitimization of the purity of blood statutes. However, despite its importance, and even though it was copied profusely between the sixteenth and eighteenth centuries, it has never been the subject of a modern critical edition. The purpose of this paper is to present the first edition of the book, to describe the problems encountered in its production and how this could affect the interpretation of the document.
