  La literatura donatista conservada pone de relieve una exaltación de la violencia, ya sea sufrida, deseada, buscada. la persecución sufrida revela entonces a la Iglesia donatista como la única verdadera, mientras que los ejecutores de esa violencia, es decir, los católicos, ni siquiera pueden llamarse "cristiano". Estos últimos deben ser condenados, excluidos y finalmente entregados a las penas del infierno. La violencia aparece entonces como un núcleo retórico, fundante y central, generalmente expresado con palabras bíblicas. Sin embargo, no parece que la jerarquía donatista fuera favorable a convertir esta retórica inflamada, en acciones concretas. En efecto, como admiten sus adversarios, a menudo se desmarcaron de las agresiones cometidas por sus correligionarios, a veces incluso condenándolas. Pero esta retórica inflamada difícilmente podía quedar sin efecto.

  The preserved Donatist literature highlights an exaltation of violence, whether suffered, desired, sought. The persecution suffered then reveals the Donatist Church as the only true one, while the executors of that violence, that is, the Catholics, cannot even call themselves "Christian." The latter must be condemned, excluded and finally handed over to the penalties of hell. Violence then appears as a rhetorical, founding and central core, generally expressed with biblical words. However, it does not seem that the Donatist hierarchy was in favor of turning this inflamed rhetoric into concrete actions. Indeed, as their adversaries admit, they often distanced themselves from the attacks committed by their coreligionists, sometimes even condemning them. But this inflamed rhetoric could hardly remain without effect.
