Estimation of size at first maturity for Trachurus murphyi using relative oxygen consumption

    Se usa un método alternativo para estimar la talla de madurez del jurel, que considera el consumo relativo de oxígeno en función del peso corporal y la constancia que ocurre en peces teleósteos entre el consumo relativo de oxígeno en la madurez y el tamaño asintótico. La varianza de la estimación se evaluó por el método de Monte Carlo, considerando la incertidumbre en los parámetros de la relación longitud-peso y del consumo relativo de oxígeno. La talla de madurez fue estimada en 25,5 cm de longitud horquilla (17,7- 31,3 cm), y fue similar a las estimaciones disponibles obtenidas mediante análisis histológico de hembras maduras. El método se aplicó a otras especies para demostrar su utilidad en la estimación de la talla de madurez sexual en peces.

    An alternative method was used to estimate size at maturity for jack mackerel. This method considers relative oxygen consumption as a function of body weight and the consistency of relative oxygen consumption at the size at first maturity and at the asymptotic size in teleosts. Variance in the estimation was evaluated with the Monte Carlo method and considering the uncertainty in the parameters of the length-weight relationship and relative oxygen consumption. Size at first maturity was estimated to be 25.5 cm fork length (17.7-31.3 cm), which was similar to other estimates made using histological analyses of mature females. The method was applied to other species with the objective of demonstrating its usefulness for estimating size at first maturity in fishes.
