La agregación de gentes, territorios, y corporaciones a la Monarquía de España implicó debates teológicos—políticos sobre su pasado para encajarlos en una historia común en clave confesional católica y policéntrica. Esas narrativas, que justificaban la propia monarquía, debían fundamentar su antiguo catolicismo, y plantearse como no apocalípticas. Fueron elaboradas mediante intercambios en la república de las letras global, entorno a redes de poder e intereses corporativos. Legitimar la inserción de cada parte como núcleo de la monarquía coadyuvaba tanto a legitimar las instituciones, como a dar cohesión al conjunto. En los reinos americanos estas justificaciones resultaban difíciles por el cuestionamiento de su conquista y por su pasado no cristiano. Sin embargo, como muestra el ejemplo de la ciudad de Cuzco y de algunas élites del reino del Perú, desde fines del siglo XVI se modeló un pasado sobre el de otras partes de la monarquía.

The aggregation of peoples, territories, and corporations to the Spanish Monarchy involved theological—political debates about its past, in order to include them in a common history, in a Catholic and polycentric confessional key. These narratives, which justified the monarchy itself, had to support its ancient Catholicism and to be non—apocalyptic. They were elaborated through exchanges in the global republic of letters, around networks of power and corporate interests. Legitimizing the insertion of each part as the core of the Monarchy helped both to legitimize the institutions and to give cohesion to the whole. In the American kingdoms, these justifications were difficult because of their contested conquest and of their non—Christian past. However, as the example of the city of Cuzco and of some of the elites of the kingdom of Peru shows, by the end of the 16th century, their past was modelled after other parts of the monarchy.
