Urinary schistosomiasis is a parasitic infection caused by Schistosoma haematobium. It is an endemic disease that affects almost all of Africa and the Middle East, although it is not common in our region. It is considered the second most prevalent parasitic infection worldwide (after malaria).
The following is a case of a patient who came to our Emergency Department with abdominal pain and spontaneously expelled a foreign body during urination, which was sent for analysis. The only notable finding in the supplementary tests is the presence of hematuria in the urinary sediment. The parasitology report indicates that the analyzed foreign body is consistent with Schistosoma haematobium.
