El excmo. Sr. D. Valentín Fuentes y López, contralmirante e ingeniero geógrafo: Su vida y su tiempo (1882-1975)

    El principal objeto de este trabajo es dar a conocer la extensa y variada vida profesional de Valentín Fuentes y López, quien llegará a ser contralmirante por ascenso concedido por el gobierno de la República en el transcurso de la guerra civil española (1936-1939), decisión que constituyó un caso único. Antes de acceder al almirantazgo, Fuentes López, que alternó su condición de militar con la de ingeniero geógrafo –de ahí que calificáramos su vida profesional de «variada»–, había ostentado el mando de las Fuerzas Navales del Cantábrico y fue el primer comandante de la base naval de Cartagena. Este último cargo lo ejerció durante un periodo no muy extenso, en arduas circunstancias y convertida esta base en el centro militar más importante de la República, ya que desde 1937 se había decretado la centralización en su territorio de los resortes del mando, segregado de la 3.ª región militar, y su regulación en una sola mano para unificar la acción, tanto en el orden civil y político como en el militar.

    Esta aproximación biográfica también pretende mostrar su itinerario vital durante el largo exilio que vivió pues, después de ser nombrado, sucesivamente, jefe de Estado Mayor y subsecretario de Marina, al finalizar la contienda hubo de asumir las variadas y crueles consecuencias de la más dolorosa de nuestras guerras, más allá de las ideologías y conciliábulos que invitaron a sus nombramientos. Sirva, pues, este estudio para paliar el ostracismo en que se ha tenido durante muchos años a nuestro personaje, a quien se llegó a considerar indigno de ser rememorado.

    The main purpose of this work is to make known the extensive and varied professional life, as he will alternate it with his tenure as a geographer engineer, of which he will become contralmirante Valentín Fuentes y López and whose promotion to this job was the only one granted by the government of the Republic in the course of the Spanish civil war (1936- 1939). Previously, after profuse shipments, he had held the command of the Cantabrian Naval Forces and was the first of those appointed to the command of the Cartagena Naval Base, exercising it in a not very extensive period, in arduous circumstances and turned this naval base into the most important military center of the Republic, given that since 1937 has been declared the centralization in its territory of the springs of command, segregated from the 3rd military region, and its regulation in a single hand had been decreed to unify the action, both in the civil and political order as in the military.

    This biographical approach also aims to show his personality in the long exile he lived, because after being successively appointed Chief of Staff of the Navy and undersecretary of the Navy, at the end of the civil war he had to assume the varied consequences that revealed the cruelty of the most painful of wars, beyond the ideologies and conciliations that invited his appointments. Let this purpose, therefore, serve to alleviate the ostracism in which he has been held for many years not only ignoring him but also considering him unworthy of such a distinction and unworthy of his memory.
