Adam Smith, the celebrated political economist and essayist on moral sentiments, displayed a lifelong interest in rhetoric and belles‐lettres. Yet except for the student notes recently published by John Lothian, no detailed analysis of Smith's rhetorical theories has been published. The purpose of this study is to summarize Smith's rhetorical views and examine their influence.
