Resumen de Immortality enough: The influence of strindberg on the expressionism of Eugene O'Neill

C. Trent Busch, Orton A. Jones

  • Eugene O'Neill often expressed his indebtedness to August Strindberg. In this article an attempt is made to demonstrate the influence Strindberg exerted upon O'Neill's expressionistic plays and to show that O'Neill's admiration for Strindberg was manifested in ways more substantial than verbal tribute. At the same time the notion that O'Neill was influenced by the so‐called German expressionists is challenged; it is held that O'Neill and the Germans resemble each other because both were independently influenced by the same source—Strindberg.
