Introduction: Readmissions of children/youth to the Pediatric Emergency Department (PED) with the same complaint as the initial admission are becoming more and more frequent, some of which are preventable.
Objective: To analyze the parents' experience regarding the readmission of the child/youth in the PED of the Local Health Unit of Castelo Branco - Amato Lusitano Hospital (ULSCB-HAL).
Methods: This is a qualitative, descriptive study of a phenomenological nature on the parents' experience about the readmission of the child/youth in the ULSCB-HAL’s PED. Interviews were used as a data collection instrument. The inclusion criteria were the parents of children/youth who presented episodes of readmission in the months of november and december 2022.
Results: Parents' experience about the readmission of their child/youth to the ULSCB-HAL’s PED is mainly due to the belief that their child's clinical situation is not improving, that is, concern about their child's health status and consequent anxiety. A positive opinion stands out about the care provided by the health professionals, considering them to be caring and dedicated, with confidence in the care provided.
Conclusion: The investigation allowed to infer that the intervention aimed at reducing readmission rates in PED is quite complex, since there are multiple factors that encourage the inappropriate use.
